Mrs. Beam

Welcome to My Classroom

My name is Toni Beam and I am a 5th grade teacher at KIS! I have been at KIS since 2014 and I'm loving it. The children, the staff, and the administration far exceed my expectations everyday. I have taught Physical Education, Health, Fourth grade, and Fifth Grade. I grew up in Rowan County and moved to Kannapolis in 2013.

Feel free to contact me by email or by school phone at (704) 932-4161.

College(s) Attended/Degrees Earned:

University of North Carolina at Greensboro: Education Degree, Community Youth Sports Development Degree, Coaching Minor

North Carolina Agricultural and State University: Masters in Education

Educational Philosophy/Vision:

All children deserve to explore and learn from the world around them. I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. As an educator, I want to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas.  For myself, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of my hopes as an educator is to instill a love of learning in my students, as I share my own passion for learning with them.

What We are Studying:

Science: Force and Motion (how things move, what forces are all around us, how to graph changes in motion)

Social Studies: American Revolution (why the colonies wanted to break away from English control)

Math: We are always reviewing standards we have already taught. We are currently finishing multiplying and dividing with decimals. Soon we will start measurement conversions (mL to L, cm to m, C to Gallon, g to kg, etc.) and reading graphs (line plots and coordinate grids).

Things parents/guardians can do to help:

Agendas are sent home nightly. The students will write their homework down each night as well as their color. Typically their homework is given on Monday (or the first day of the week) and is taken up on Friday (or the last day of the week). It is your child's responsibility to get homework sheets and missing work from absent days. The students start on green each day. They may clip up to pink, purple, and blue depending on how great their behavior was. They may clip down to yellow, orange, or red depending on how many times I had to correct their behavior.

Papers are sent home during the week in their Orange Take Home Folders. There is a paper in the back of the Take Home Folder that needs to be signed on Mondays. Your child may use this as their homework folder as well.

Please sign up with me on for important announcements, homework, and information.

Online Resources:

Dreambox: This is an app that your child uses on a regular basis at school (20-30 minutes twice a week). Their subscription is paid for by the school. It is a math app. It takes about 20-30 minutes to complete one lesson on Dreambox. It is leveled to meet your student at their current math level. Your child’s login information is in the front of their agenda.

School code: exge/kannapolisis

Front Row: This is a free app that I have used for a few years. I use this app for math practice although they also have reading standards as well. They are able to choose which strand they want to work on (Geometry, Base 10, Fractions, etc) and it starts them off with a pretest in each strand to help match them to activities that would be appropriate for them. They can play this for any amount of time. Your child’s login information is their first name, their last name, and the Class Code listed below.

Class Code: rwawju

Sumdog and Sumdog 3D: This is an app that is paid for by Mrs. Beam. This has math games on it that help your child with fact fluency and rapid recall. This is something that they can compete with against other students as well. To earn more coins/points your child can select a harder standard. Your child’s login information is on a separate piece of paper glued in the front of their agenda.
